AI for Science is a specialized stream within AIMS South Africa’s Master’s in Mathematical Science, created in partnership with Google DeepMind. The program lies at the dynamic crossroads of artificial intelligence and the natural sciences. Launched with its first cohort in September 2023, it is a fully residential, one-year taught master’s program that includes a research component.
Applications are open to students from across Africa who are passionate about mathematics, AI, and machine learning. They seek curious, motivated individuals who look at the universe with wonder and aspire to use their skills to drive scientific discovery forward.
Eligibility:
Your undergraduate degree could be in physics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering or any other discipline with a strong computational and mathematical component.

The online application is not a test, but the questions are designed to give the selection panel insight into your problem-solving approach. Because a strong application takes time to prepare, we encourage prospective Google DeepMind Scholars at AIMS South Africa to begin the process early rather than waiting until the last minute.
2. The final stage will feature brief online interviews scheduled for May 2026.
